Peer Matching Program

Individuals living with an inborn error of metabolism (IEM) can experience unique challenges at all life stages. Whether you’re adjusting to a new diagnosis, learning to manage an IEM during childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood, ‘returning to diet’- MDDA’s Peer Support Program connects individuals, families and carers with trained Peer Mentors who have lived experience with an IEM.

How Peer Matching Works

You tell us a bit about yourself—your condition, age, role (e.g. carer or individual), and what kind of support you’re looking for.

We match you with a peer who shares a similar experience or life stage.

You connect in a way that suits you—by phone, message, or email. It’s entirely up to you both.

  • Anyone living with an IEM in Australia
  • Parents learning to manage their child’s condition
  • Teenagers or young adults learning to independently manage their IEM
  • Adults returning to a low-protein diet
  • Families, friends or carers seeking support
  • A friendly, listening ear from someone who “gets it”
  • Emotional support, connection and understanding
  • Sharing of lived experiences (but not medical advice)
  • Encouragement to stay connected with your healthcare team
  • They do not provide treatment advice, dietary guidance, or crisis support.
  • All mentors are trained in confidentiality, boundaries, and safe support.
  • You can self-refer or be referred by your clinic.
  • Support is available through small group meetings and/or 1:1 peer connection.
  • Sessions can be in-person, online, or by phone.

Why Join Our Peer Support Network?

By connecting with others who truly understand, you can:

  • Feel less alone – Share your story and be heard.
  • Give and receive support – Help others while getting support yourself.
  • Learn practical tips – From managing a low protein diet to navigating healthcare or coping emotionally.
  • Access helpful content – Including wellbeing resources and expert Q&As.

Join Our Online Communities

Friendly spaces for real connection.
In addition to peer matching, MDDA also offers two welcoming online communities on Facebook, moderated by our team to keep them safe, respectful and supportive.

Our Two Groups:

  • MDDA Community – Open to individuals, families, and carers of all ages living with an IEpM in Australia.
  • MDDA Adults – A space just for adults aged 18+ living with an IEpM, to share, connect and support each other through adult life.

Whether you’re sharing a milestone, asking a question, or just want to chat with someone who gets it, these groups are here for you.
